In addition to building, rebuilding, and restoring pipe organs, we also perform regular maintenance on instruments throughout Ohio and surrounding states.
Many of the instruments we care for were built in our shop, but we routinely take care of organs built by others. Our knowledgeable service team is able to care for all kinds of pipe organs – from large mechanical-action organs in historic temperaments, to small modern electric-action church organs. In addition to regular tunings, we also routinely address minor mechanical problems as part of our service call.
To prepare for our visit, the temperature of the room in which the organ is located must be set at “occupied” for several hours prior to our arrival. This is essential for an accurate tuning because the pitch produced by an organ pipe is very sensitive to temperature. The pitch will rise as the temperature rises. This sensitivity to temperature also means that most clients ask for the organ to be tuned twice a year: once when the heat comes on, and again in the early summer when the air conditioning season begins.
When we first visit a new maintenance client, we will tune through the entire instrument. This will allow us to discover any problems the organ may have. A written report, including our suggestions to address any problems, will be sent to the client after our first visit, and a service contract can be arranged.
